The "Downhead" chess pieces are ideally suited as a first quality wooden chess set. Although they look simple, the pieces are handcrafted and polished by hand to give them their semi-gloss appearance. The same design is used in international chess tournaments. They are weighted to improve balance and stability, reducing the risk of accidentally knocking a piece over.
Close attention is given to the knight, allowing the artisan to express creativity. The knight features a crafted mane, muzzle and nostrils. Boxwood of high quality has been used for all 32 pieces. The black pieces are ebonised — a dyeing process giving them an appearance similar to real ebony. The king measures slightly more than 3" (approx 3 1/8") and weighs approximately 40g. Green felts on the underside protect your board and allow easy sliding. Pieces are single-weighted for added stability.
